About
Built because the year-end model wasn't built for owners.
From the founder
Why I started Cadence.
Accounting runs in my family. My mother was an accountant at a software company, and some of my earliest memories are of her office — the ledgers, the filing cabinets, the rhythm of month-end.
I took accounting in high school and finished with an average north of 100%. A classmate photographed the mid-year mark report because nobody believed him. The teacher's response was to draft me as controller of the prom committee.

After that: Commerce at Queen's — now the Smith School of Business — management consulting at the Boston Consulting Group, and then a company of my own, which raised several rounds of venture funding and was eventually acquired.
Through all of it, I was also the client. Bookkeeping was never the problem; ours was fine. Tax was. Returns went in late. Numbers came back wrong. Invoices arrived higher than the quote, with an explanation attached. I changed firms three times and landed on one I would describe, generously, as okay.
Then a top-tier firm billed me $17,000 to prepare a relatively simple form. I redid it myself, with AI, in about two hours — and found significant mistakes in theirs.
That is the whole thesis behind Cadence. Software is better than people at assembling documents and checking them for errors. People are better at judgment, so a tax professional reviews everything before it goes out. And you get the fee before the work starts and the filing date before the season does, because both should be promises rather than estimates.

What we believe
Advice is only useful before the decision.
Speed is a form of respect
A question that waits three weeks was answered too late, and a return filed after the deadline costs real money. We commit to response and filing standards, then build our operations around meeting them.
The company and the owner are one file
Corporate tax decisions land on someone's personal return. Handling them separately is how surprises happen.
Technology serves judgment
Automation organizes, checks and flags. People review, decide and advise. Every filing is reviewed by a tax professional.
Honesty about scope
We're not a CPA firm, and we don't pretend otherwise. Audits, assurance, legal work and specialist tax matters go to independent licensed professionals.
How an engagement is staffed
Tax professionals, not account managers
File ownership
A named tax professional, from onboarding onward
One person owns your file end to end, reviews every position taken on it, and answers your questions directly rather than routing them.
Preparation
T2s, T1s, instalments and CRA correspondence
The corporate and owner returns are prepared together, instalments calculated from them, and routine CRA correspondence handled on your behalf.
Operations and technology
Automation and quality control
The automation and quality-control workflows behind the service — the reason a small team can hold a filing calendar without dropping dates.
Trust, in evidence
We earn confidence with specifics, not letterhead.
CRA EFILE registered
Authorized to file electronically with the CRA under its suitability screening.
Human review before release
No filing or recommendation goes out without a tax professional reviewing it first.
Insured
Professional-liability and cyber insurance held and disclosed on request.
Secure by default
Client data encrypted in transit and at rest. Document exchange runs through our client portal as it rolls out — taking tax slips and SINs out of email.
Response and filing standards
First reply within one business day, and filings delivered on the date agreed — commitments, not aspirations.
Referred out, not attempted
Assurance work, legal implementation and specialist tax matters go to licensed CPAs and legal counsel rather than being taken on here.
Full FAQ
Every question, answered
Are you a CPA firm?
No. Cadence is an independent tax and accounting services company. We prepare tax returns, provide tax advice and planning, maintain accounting records and assist clients with routine CRA matters. We do not provide audits, review engagements or other independent assurance services. Where those or legal services are required, we work with independent licensed professionals.
Can I use you if I already have a bookkeeper?
Yes. You do not have to move your bookkeeping to us. We can work with your existing bookkeeper or internal finance team, review the year-end records and manage the company and owner's tax work. We also provide bookkeeping where a client prefers one integrated service.
Do you serve businesses throughout Canada?
Yes, with one exception: we do not currently serve Quebec. We work with incorporated businesses and professional corporations in every other province and the territories, including owners operating in more than one province. Quebec corporations file separately with Revenu Québec, and we do not currently prepare those filings.
Do you handle US or international tax?
No. US federal and state filings, foreign returns and other cross-border tax matters are referred to specialists — we flag them early and work alongside the specialist. Selling to US or international customers from your Canadian corporation is different: that is core work. Exported services and goods are generally zero-rated for GST/HST, and US-dollar invoices produce exchange gains we handle as part of the normal service.
Do you prepare both corporate and personal tax returns?
Yes — that is the core of the service. The corporate return and the owner's personal return are prepared in the same relationship, so compensation, investment income and personal tax are considered together.
How do you use AI?
In the plumbing, not the judgment. Automation and AI-assisted workflows organize information, flag inconsistencies and cut repetitive processing — much of it running on software we build in-house where it makes sense, so the tools fit the way we work rather than the other way around. That buys our accountants more time for review and advice. In the client portal, that software reads each document you upload and suggests whose it is, which year it covers and what kind of document it is. OpenAI can help with that reading using selected text, with recognized names replaced by temporary labels and sensitive identifiers screened out. The original files and images stay in the portal. You confirm or correct the suggestion before anything is sorted. Our privacy policy explains OpenAI's processing outside Canada and its retention terms. AI never decides a tax position and never files a return: a tax professional reviews and signs off on every filing and recommendation.
Can you help me decide between salary and dividends?
Yes. Compensation planning is a standard part of the Year-Round Tax Partner package, and an annual compensation review is included in every package.
Can you communicate with the CRA for me?
Yes. With your authorization we handle routine CRA correspondence, notice-of-assessment reviews, requests for information and account corrections on your behalf. Active major disputes are accepted selectively or referred.
What is the on-time filing guarantee?
If we have your complete records by the date we agree at onboarding and we still miss a filing deadline, we pay the CRA late-filing penalty and interest caused by the delay — and credit that month’s fee. The guarantee covers the T2, owner T1s, GST/HST and payroll filings we are engaged to prepare. It does not apply where records arrive after the agreed date or where CRA systems are unavailable.
How is pricing determined?
By the number of entities, the complexity of the tax work, the state of your records and whether bookkeeping or reporting is included. Packages start at $3,000 per year for Business Tax Compliance (including the corporate T2 and the owner’s T1), $6,000 for the Year-Round Tax Partner, which adds the payroll tax filings, and $12,000 for Tax + Accounting, which adds the bookkeeping and runs the payroll itself. Fees are fixed annually, payable monthly, and agreed at the estimate stage — so the fee is known before any work begins.
Am I too small for Cadence?
If you have outgrown DIY tax software, or you have a corporation, you are a fit — that is the whole test. There is no ceiling at the other end: multi-entity groups, holding companies and owner-manager situations with a lot of moving parts are ordinary work here. The only returns we point elsewhere are genuinely simple personal ones — a single T4 and nothing else.
Do I have to move to a particular accounting system?
No. We work with any mainstream system, provided you can give us digital records and access. We recommend changes only where they improve the quality or efficiency of the service.
Do you work with doctors, dentists and other incorporated professionals?
Yes — physicians, dentists and other regulated health professionals with professional corporations are one of the core groups Cadence is built for, including holding-company and retained-earnings planning.
Can you handle holding companies and real-estate corporations?
Yes. Multi-entity structures, HoldCos and rental corporations are a core focus. Major development projects, cross-border ownership and complex syndications are referred to specialists.
Do you provide bookkeeping?
Yes — full-service bookkeeping: monthly books, reconciliations, cleanups and management statements, handled by the same team that does your tax work. Many owners bring their own bookkeeper instead, and that works just as well — it is your choice, never a requirement.
Do you provide audits or review engagements?
No. Assurance work requires a licensed public-accounting firm. If your bank or investors require an audit or review, we refer you to an independent CPA firm and work alongside them.
How does switching work?
One CRA authorization and a short records request. We coordinate prior records with your outgoing accountant, review past filings, flag anything that needs attention and start your filing calendar immediately. Your side of it is signing, authorizing, and answering a short list of questions.
